Gers seal keeper deal

by Alex Livie -  created on 31 Jan 2005

Rangers have swelled their ranks with the capture of Dutch keeper Ronald Waterreus from Manchester City.

The two clubs agreed a deal after Rangers stepped in to find a replacement for injured number one Stefan Klos.

Waterreus, who had been playing second fiddle to David James at Eastlands, had little hesitation in swapping Manchester for Glasgow due to the fact that he would be able to secure regular first-team football in what is the twilight of his career.

The 34-year-old only joined City in the summer from PSV Eindhoven but has been lured away by the prospect of regular action, having featured just twice for Kevin Keegan's side.

Waterreus goes straight into the Gers squad for Wednesday's CIS Cup semi-final with Dundee United.

The Dutchman claims he had little hesitation in accepting the terms on offer, as he believes it will give him a chance to shine.

"I got a phone call on Friday night and I learned about the unfortunate circumstances of Stefan Klos," Waterreus told Rangers' website. "But I realise that this could be a big chance for me.

"I am fit to play and confident I can do well. I am really looking forward to playing my first game for Rangers at Hampden."
