Who is Scotland's best striker of all time?

Elliott announces retirement

by Patrick Goss -  created on 31 Jan 2005

Leicester's veteran defender Matt Elliott has announced his retirement from football.

The former Oxford United star has struggled to get back to full fitness following a knee injury, and has decided to hang up his boots.

Elliott has played just three times this season, despite surgery in the summer - and has not featured for The Foxes since October.

The 36-year-old had spent much of his career in the lower league, when Martin O'Neill paid £1.6 million for his services in January 1997 - with the player going on to make nearly 300 appearances for The Foxes.

The powerful defender became a firm favourite at Leicester, with his eye for goal and 100 percent attitude also winning him a place in the Scotland team.
