Who is Scotland's best striker of all time?

Addicks failed with bid

by Patrick Haond -  created on 31 Jan 2005

Charlton Athletic have reportedly failed with a sizeable bid to sign Lens star Olivier Thomert.

Alan Curbishley has been thwarted in his attempts to land the 24-year-old and Manchester City were also keen to snap up the attacking midfielder this month.

Lens refused to consider allowing the player to leave during the transfer window but may be tempted to listen to offers again in the summer.

"Olivier is a boy we rely on a lot for the end of the season," Lens supremo Gervais Martel told L'Equipe.

"Then, as we can understand his desire to have a new orientation in his career, we are keen to talk about his future with him."

French sources claim Charlton were willing to splash out €4.5 million (£3.1 million) on Thomert and offer him a four-and-a-half year contract at The Valley.

City boss Kevin Keegan is another admirer of the former Le Mans man, who has also attracted attention from Tottenham in the past.

Charlton's interest has been revealed in the past, as they were linked with a move for Thomert last June.

Meanwhile, Lens have signed Jussie Ferreira Vieira from Belo Horizonte.

The young Brazilian striker has penned a five-year deal for €2 million.

Sang et Or chairman Gervais Martel has admitted there will be no other signings, despite chasing Panathinaikos' Emanuel Olisadebe and Paris Saint Germain forward Danijel Ljuboja.

"We have ended our reinforcements," he stated. "Indeed, we thought about Ljuboja but it is really over now."
