The forerunners of modern household insecticides

Over thirty years ago - the beginnings of household insecticide research
In the sixties chemists developed various active ingredients which stopped the unbridled spread of harmful insects. In particular the phosphoric acid esters such as E 605, Dichlorvos, Trichlorfon, and organo-chlorides such as Lindan were soon in common use in agriculture.
In the seventies, when the trend was to increase agricultural production as a fast as possible, the organo-chlorides and phosphoric acid esters were some of the most used insecticides in the world. Further lab experimentation led researchers to the conclusion that some of these first-generation products had disadvantages. In the search for new classes of chemicals, the reputable manufacturers were looking for more efficient substances with a better spectrum of side-effects. These were to be chemicals with even more specific actions on pests, and so with less effect on the so-called non-target organisms. Effective and safe - a new generation of insecticides
Another group of active ingredients, which were developed at about the same time as the phosphoric acid esters, are the carbamates. In the past thirty years these active ingredients have been further developed in extensive lab studies.

The modern domestic insecticides - their agents and effects

The pyrethroid class of agent - the synthetic copy of pyrethrum
Science and research view the advantage of the synthetically produced pyrethroids as their selective action on insects and their efficient toxicological potential. Due to their high specific effectiveness and reliability, the pyrethroids are currently used throughout the world as pesticides in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, and as well in the domestic, hygiene and veterinary sectors. The WHO (World Health Organisation) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) attribute great significance to this class of chemicals in the field of vector (disease carrier) control, for instance in tropical countries. Transfluthrin - the new pyrethroid generation After a research period lasting more than ten years, scientists have evolved a completely new pyrethroid agent, Transfluthrin, by following the principle "as little agent as possible - as much effect as needed". Since the beginning of 1996, in Germany Transfluthrin has been incorporated in particular Baygon brand products, and in addition it is to be used worldwide in over a hundred countries in which Baygon is distributed. This active ingredients satisfies all the requirements of a modern insecticide in respect to effectiveness and safety. It targets pests specifically, acts even at low concentrations.
