Kmart Brings Back Blue-Light Specials Reportedly, Kmart has reintroduced its signature marketing icon, the blue-light special. Although no actual blue lights were installed, several signs have been posted inside and outside of stores advertising the blue-light logo. Kmart?s blue-light specials were first used in 1965 to signal sales on clearance merchandise. The blue-light specials became associated with undesirable merchandise and in 1991, Kmart dropped the campaign.
