SAN FRANCISCO (January 5, 2005) â?? In response to the South Asia tsunami tragedy, the Levi Strauss Foundation has committed more than $500,000 to relief efforts over the next several months.
The foundation made grants of $100,000 each to Oxfam and Save the Children this week. These highly regarded international relief organizations were selected because they are providing on-the-ground assistance that is having an immediate and long-term impact on saving lives in the most devastated communities.
The Levi Strauss Foundation also will make a series of grants totaling $160,000 to local nonprofit agencies throughout the region in the months ahead for mid- to long-term relief and rebuilding efforts. Additional grants will be given through a special fund that has been established to match Levi Strauss & Co. employee donations to Oxfam and Save the Children during the next three months. This special matching program increases the foundationâ??s standard dollar-for-dollar match to $2 for each employee dollar donated and is available to all of the companyâ??s 9,500 employees worldwide. The foundation estimates that employee matching grants will exceed $150,000, bringing the foundationâ??s total tsunami relief funding to more than $500,000.
