Happy 2005
January 19, 2005
Back on the set of the “Shaggy Dog” with a moment to reflect on the last year- like the weather, it was a year of changes and I just practice watching and adapting.
Christmas and New Year’s meant some quality time with family. I took some of my family to Disneyland...it’s still tons of laughs. I then went home to Michigan, took a road trip to see and spend time with family that could not join us at Disneyland. Family was calm and warm this year. I finished the year underwater- doing some scuba diving and visiting friends in Mexico. It is a wonderful world down there. We were very thrilled to see and touch a 40-foot whale shark lumbering alone looking for whatever it is they look for. The other pro divers in the group were more excited than the less experienced as this sort of interaction for them was quite rare. New Year’s just has never been a thrill for me and this year it was much the same. Too much pressure to be excited I guess.
All the while I was near the beach, all I could think of was the power of this water. The terrible tsunami and its effects were widespread. Such a force, such pain and hurt. Its terror was so distant yet I felt the pull of humanity.
The unknown we face, the frailty of life, the questions, the feelings all went deep. I encourage others to consider the second wave of help after the initial focus wears off. I finished reading The Science of Good and Evil by Michael Shermer, which I will outline for the site very soon. It was the intellectual backdrop for the impressions I created on this trip. Can evil be reduced to a manifested entity or 'thing' outside of our perceptions of it? I will 'dive' into this more as time goes on.
“Shaggy” is a fun movie to do. I can always beat myself up a bit on not doing more 'important' movies- or even sci-fi like I love- but with the cast the fun factor is high suggesting the end product will be big fun too. And going to work each and every day is a blessing in my life.
