Beck, Blur, Jarvis Cocker and Billy Corgan are among the stellar artists who have contributed to Marianne Faithfull's new album, Kissin Time, which is released by Hut Recordings on Monday 4th March 2002. The album - her first in almost three years - is a series of collaborations and specially commissioned songs from an illustrious line-up of Faithfull devotees. Marianne has written the lyrics to eight of the songs.
Who is Marianne Faithfull?
Marianne Faithfull is rock and roll history, the ultimate rock chick and a muse to stars from Mick Jagger to Beck and Blur. She's a singer, with top ten hits like "This Little Bird" and "Come and Stay With Me", an actress in classic movies like The Girl on a Motorcycle and a writer with an autobiography and songs on the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers and on her own brilliant albums. Marianne Faithfull is a legend.
After some pretty hard times and the split with Jagger, whose girlfriend she was in the glory days of the 60s (much to the delight of the tabloids who loved her exquisite looks and racy lifestyle), Marianne released Broken English in 1979. It was an unmitigated triumph. An extraordinary album, with vocals that sounded like they had crawled over broken glass, a quality showcased on the heart-breaking single, "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan", Broken English found itself on most Records of the Year lists by the beginning of 1980.
Marianne continued recording, releasing Strange Weather, a collection of classic songs all put through the Faithfull mill, in 1987 and was pronounced to be on genius form. Then in 2002, having returned to acting, Faithfull geared up to release what many believe to be her most interesting album to date, a collection of collaborations with some of the world's most outstanding musicians: Beck, Dave Stewart, Blur, Jarvis Cocker, all eager to work with the woman who has seen it, done it, written it, sung it.
