| The origins of HUD Group can be traced to 1846, when the first Scotsman sailed east to work in a Chinese shipyard on the south China coast's Pearl River. A few years later, dockyards began to be developed in Hong Kong and the industry grew to become the largest employers in the territory. By the 1920s two companies dominated the industry, Hongkong & Whampoa Dock Company and Taikoo Dockyard & Engineering Company. HUD Group was formed in 1973 with the merger of these two companies. Whilst proud of its history, HUD Group today is a forward-looking company committed to blending its experience with the latest techniques and innovations to carry it into the 21st century. This commitment is amply demonstrated by constructing a totally new yard in 1990, and building a new 40,000 tonnes lifting capacity floating dock in 1995. In addition to its services to the shipping industry, HUD Group is a major Hong Kong contractor for steelwork and mechanical and electrical engineering. HUD Group's wholly owned subsidiary HUD Engineering is ISO certified for quality assurance, and site work is supported and complemented by extensive workshop and yard facilities.
