Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I book a hotel?
A: You can search by name, location, accommodation type, price range and AA–quality rating.

If you're booking online, we'll check availability and pricing and confirm your booking online, wherever possible. If this service isn't available, you can request a booking online and we'll check and confirm it by email within 24 hours. Either way, you can do everything online – there's no need to make any phone calls.

If you wish to make a telephone reservation, call the AA Hotel Booking Service on 0870 5050505. They will provide you with details of your chosen hotel and, if necessary, suggest alternatives.


Q: Once I've submitted my Breakdown application form, when will I be covered?
A: Usually, within a minute of submitting the application form you'll receive an email confirming you've joined the AA. If you choose Relay and Relay Plus, benefits only start 24 hours after your membership starts. Then within 14 days you should get your member pack and card.

Choose to pay by continuous payment, and your subscription will be debited from either your bank account, or your credit card once a year around the anniversary of your joining date. You can choose to pay annually via direct debit or credit card. We'll write to let you know the cost of renewal each year before the payment is collected.

Remember, you're covered even if you are on the road in any car or motorbike, even as a passenger or if you're driving someone else's car.

Q: I am trying to get an insurance quote online but I can't find my occupation. Which option should I select to get a quote?
A : If you're trying to get an online insurance quote, please always select your full–time employer's business first. If you're having trouble finding an occupation, please choose the closest option. If, for example, you're retired, please select 'Not in Employment' from the drop–down menu for 'Employer's Business'. You will then be able to select 'Retired' from the list of jobs in the field below. You will need to select 'Not in Employment' if you are a housewife or house husband too. If you are still having trouble, look out for details of our 'Phone Me' service, which appear at the bottom of each page.

Q: Can I get a route from my home address to a destination in Continental Europe?
A : We can't map your route from the UK to Continental Europe because the route depends on how you choose to cross the Channel. Try planning a UK route to your chosen UK port. Then, to continue, map your route from the European port you land in to your destination.

And remember if you're travelling in Europe, you'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Q: What happens if I forget my password?
A: Don't worry! Simply click on 'Forgotten your password?' and we'll email you a new one. We recommend you log in and change your password to one that will be easier to remember.

Q: Can I link to www.theAA.com from my web site?
A: Our users fall into the 25 to 49 age group and 69 per cent are male. All of them come to us for information on traffic, route planning, holidays and cars, plus insurance, loans and other financial services. You can join our free affiliate programme, by registering with ukaffiliates.com (our programme provider), or you can set up a text link to our site by giving us your company details.
