The Research Organization at Bell Labs consists of six divisions: Physical Sciences, Computer Science & Software, Mathematical Sciences, Network Applications, Optical Networking, and Wireless Networking. Collectively, these organizations are critical to Lucent's delivery of innovative technologies to the world.
Research organizations focus on fundamental research in physical sciences and engineering, computing and mathematical sciences, and communications sciences. Special emphasis is placed on silicon processing, photonic communications and wireless communications -- three of the core technologies of the corporation.
Other areas focus on the underlying technologies for the next generation global information infrastructure; devices, subsystems and systems architectures for high-capacity transmission systems; optical networks; ultra long-haul optical transmission and optical access; research in statistics; mathematics of networks; performance analysis; communication theory; core mathematics; fundamental statistics research; distributed computing; algorithms; formal methods; Internet-related security and systems; scientific computing; computational geometry; languages; user interfaces and software design.
