Research Opportunities for You at Bell Labs The Research organization at Bell Labs, which comprises about 10 percent of the staff and has locations worldwide, is divided into eight areas: - Physical Sciences focuses on fundamental research in physical sciences. We develop new physical processes, prototype components, fabricate new materials, characterize physical capabilities, conduct reliability analyses, and perform ecological research. Emphasis is placed on silicon processing, photonic communications and wireless communications.

- Computing Sciences focuses on research in selected areas of computer science by studying computational problems and building new systems. Current research encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, including protocols, switches, routers, control, signaling, software and hardware, for both wireless and wireline networks.

- Multimedia Communications focuses on research to create leading-edge technology for audiovisual communincations and human-machine dialog, as well as the integration of audio and visual processing methods for enhancing the quality of multimedia information systems. Specific technologies that are being explored are signal compression, speech and image recognition, speech and image synthesis, smart microphones and cameras, communications technologies such as echo cancellation and channel coding, and implementations using DSP and NSP.
