Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs To Host Nanotechnology Standards Panel

FOR RELEASE TUESDAY JANUARY 18, 2005

MURRAY HILL, N.J. - In support of the U.S. government's effort to encourage growth of the nascent nanotechnology industry, Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) Bell Labs will host the second meeting of the American National Standards Institute's Nanotechnology Standards Panel (ANSI-NSP) Steering Committee on Jan. 19. The meeting will be held at Lucent's Murray Hill, N.J., headquarters, which also is home to the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium (NJNC), a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies.

The ANSI-Nanotechnology Standards Panel strives to address standardization in a collaborative forum that supports academia, industry, investors and government agencies that utilize nanotechnology. It was formed in Aug. 2004, in response to an inquiry by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the United States President. The panel's first meeting was held Sept. 29-30, 2004.

Members of the panel's steering committee will meet under the direction of the three co-chairs: Dr. David Bishop, vice president, Nanotechnology Research, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies and president, New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium; Dr. Clayton Teague, director, National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO); and Dr. Vicki Colvin, professor of Chemistry, Rice University and director, National Science Foundation-sponsored Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology (CBEN).

"Establishing standards is a critical step for moving nanotechnology from the laboratory into commercial applications," said Bishop. "As the field of nanotechnology progresses and matures, Bell Labs and the NJNC will continue to support the important work of organizations such as ANSI-NSP."

Standardization topics already discussed by the panel include terminology and nomenclature, as well as materials properties, and testing, measurement and characterization procedures.
