| RESERVE POWER SYSTEMS - C&D Technologies is a leading North American supplier of integrated reserve power systems - the products that keep the telecommunications and electronic information industries operating in case of electrical power failure. C&D designs, produces and markets power electronics components and battery systems which sense an electrical power problem and provide emergency reserve, or backup, power. As such our systems ensure that the communications voice and data back bone on which businesses and consumers depend does not fail due to electrical power problems. We serve the reserve power business through our Standby Power Division.
MOTIVE POWER - The company's Motive Power Division designs and manufactures fully integrated power systems (batteries plus related electronics) for electrical industrial vehicles such as forklift trucks, automated guided vehicles and airline ground support vehicles. | | | | EMBEDDED POWER AND BOARD-MOUNT PRODUCTS - Our power electronics products are used in telecommunications applications (such as optical switches and central office network equipment), high end infrastructure, large computer systems and office equipment (such as copiers and facsimile machines). These products are referred to as "embedded" or "board mount" because they are built into the equipment or circuit boards at the time of manufacture by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). C&D power electronic products - which are designed, produced and marketed by our Power Electronics Division - perform two basic functions: They rectify, or convert AC power to DC, and they step down DC power to lower voltages for use in electronic equipment. Since virtually all electronic equipment operates only on DC power and virtually all traditional sources of electrical power, such as wall outlets, are AC, conversion from AC to DC is essential. After conversion to DC, the power is then stepped down to appropriate voltages and distributed within the electronic system as needed. |
