Lawmakers question Caltrans officials over Schwarzenegger's Bay Bridge plan
SACRAMENTO Lawmakers question state transportation officials over their plan to replace the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge with a plainer design they say will save money. The Schwarzenegger administration wants to abandon the single tower suspension bridge currently approved and instead complete the two-mile span with a towerless concrete skyway. The hearing represents the best chance for Caltrans officials to make the case for the skyway design to skeptical lawmakers, including many who believe the state should stick with the approved plan.
