LOS ANGELES (AP) A longtime dock worker died and another was seriously injured in separate incidents at the Port of Los Angeles the second fatality in less than a week.
Matt Petrasich, 63, of Rancho Palos Verdes, was found dead Monday morning atop a cargo container on the Panamanian-flagged Ever Deluxe ship. His body was spotted by a crane operator, said Bill Orton of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.
Petrasich, a ``hatch boss,'' was supervising a work crew unloading cargo aboard the ship when he died, said port spokeswoman Sheila Gonzales.
``Everybody on this waterfront is grieving,'' said Danny Miranda, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 94. ``He was loved by a lot of people. Not one person could ever say a bad thing about him.''
The death was being investigated by Cal-OSHA and federal OSHA officials.
Petrasich, who was married, had worked the docks for 40 years and was a favorite among young workers.
Miranda said Petrasich was ``doing more than he should'' due to cutbacks on foremen on the docks. Union officials spoke with Pacific Maritime Association representatives Monday about his death and workplace safety.
The port terminal was closed for 24 hours by the Pacific Maritime Association and Marine Terminals Corp. in memory of Petrasich and to investigate his death.
In a separate incident, foreman Cody Bates, 43, suffered serious leg injuries when a forklift struck him. He was treated and released at a nearby hospital.
Conce P. Campbell, 52, died last Wednesday in a switching accident on Terminal Island after slipping under a Burlington Northern and Santa Fe cargo train. Campbell, the father of seven adopted children, died at the scene.
