| Bic Sport was founded in 1979 by Baron Bich, a lover of the sea, who established his new enterprise in Brittany, on that superb coastline where everything is dedicated to water sports. Baron Bich?s plan was to produce boards in big manufacturing runs so as to keep prices down. By the beginning of the 80s more than 90,000 had already left the factory at Vannes. Today over 30,000 are produced every year. For 25 years Bic Sport has surrounded itself with the best shapers and the most talented riders. In the mid 80s the factory produced the biggest selling windsurf boards which, from this point, started moving more towards funboards : the Rock and Roll, the Astro Rock and the Electric Rock. More than 70,000 Astro Rocks would be made in the following five years. Not content with our success in the world of windsurf we decide to apply the same formula to surf. Using the traditional hand made method, Bic Sport surf boards are designed by top shapers who first come up with a prototype, these are then used to make a mould to re-produce thousands of identical models. Today our range of surf boards comprises five different models, represents more than 50% of the French market and is exceptionally successful in overseas markets. In 1994 Bic Sport buys out board maker Tiga and begins manufacturing their range. Although produced in our factory, Tiga boards retain their distinct character and their own identity. All this success and these legendary boards means that in 1997 Bic Sport manufacturers its 1,000,000th board. One of the key elements of this success is controlling costs, achieved thanks to considerable and well mastered technical know-how allowing us to produce boards that are excellent value for money. Shaped by Fabien Vollenweider, the Techno 283 is a great success, very well received by the public, it?s an ultra-accessible board that allows everyone to learn funboard and re-discover the pure pleasure of boarding. By 2002 there are already 20,000 Technos sailing the world. 1999 also sees the development of a Wakeboard range under the Tiga brand, the new sport somewhere between surf and water ski that?s such a big success in America and elsewhere. After 15 years of presence on the circuit we finally crack the nut with Kevin Pritchard?s 2000 PWA world championship success, and he reiterates the point the following year taking the 2001 Formula world championship. With these two victories we demonstrate our expertise and versatility in all areas of sailing. 2001 sees the creation of the first ever world Longboard challenge, the general principle being to let all the best surfers in the world loose on all the best spots all riding identical boards : the Bic longboard, it?s the first ?formula? event of its kind in surf. Our latest departure is the development of a full range of kitesurf equipment, the Airflow boards shaped by Marco Copello have been developed at Vannes while the kite wings have been produced by Takoon but are distributed by us from Vannes. In 2002 Bic Sport has every intention of reinforcing its position as the world leader in all its disciplines : Wakeboard, Kitesurf, Surf and Windsurf, with the same philosophy it started out with : The pleasure of sailing for everyone. |
