The adventure proper began back in 1968 with the release of the Sportyak 1. These small, rounded inshore playthings were quickly a big success with French holidaymakers. The Tabur II was released in 1971, and the Tabur III a year later. The factory at Zone Industrielle du Prat was enlarged and the Tabur IV, the biggest in the range, followed in 1975. At that year's Paris Boat Show Tabur brings a boat down the staircase with a test pilot sitting in to prove how strong the boats are ! A test which quickly becomes one of those legends of the specialist press of the time and does much to feed the Sportyak's image. Literally thousands of fun seekers took to the water in the slightly odd, catamaran style craft. Parents were reassured by its stability, children could go easily out alone, carrying the ultra-light boat themselves to the water for some of the best holiday memories of their lifetimes. The Sportyak 1 and the Tabur II - since then transformed into the Bic 252 - have become reference points in that small world of inshore leisure and fishing boats. Their shapes haven't aged, their reliability and stability have still to be bettered even now. |
