The main construction of the garment is aided by a sewing machine. However, all trimmings, piping and intricate details are mastered by hand stitching. This includes embroidered, beaded and sequined details as well as the construction of the signature oriental Chinese fastenings. This process takes approximately 7-10 days from the first fitting. Further fittings can be performed at this stage, if necessary to ensure that the garment meets you're exacting requirement.

As one of our valued tailoring customers, you are greeted in our Tea Room by our experienced team of tailoring consultants. You will have the opportunity to discuss and refine your ideas about style and fabrication of your tailored piece. We offer complementary Chinese tea and snacks throughout the consultation.

You can choose either a specific style of dress you have in mind or something illustrated in our tailoring books. Our skilled staff will give advice and help select the style, which best complements your figure and suits your particular occasion. We offer a vast array of fabrics, many of which are exclusive to Shanghai Tang, including lush cut-velvets, hand-woven silk jacquards, delicate gossamer veils, luxurious linens, printed cottons and exquisitely embroidered silk.

Once your style of garment has been selected, our master tailor "see fu" will take ten to twenty measurements depending on the design, and produce a pattern unique to you. A silhouette mock up of the garment, called "toile" is madeup in calico. Since a tailored garment is unique to your body it is essential to fit every contour perfectly. The first fitting with the calico is important. This can be ready as soon as the following day. Any major changes or adjustments are to be made on the calico. Once the perfect fit is determined, the "see fu" cuts out the pattern in your chosen fabric.
