Meerwald faces two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the July 2004 incident. Legislation to increase the penalty for involuntary manslaughter in a drunk driving crash was introduced this year because of this case. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Gary Nodler, would increase the penalty for involuntary manslaughter from seven years to 15 years maximum if it involves a vehicle crash where the driver has a blood alcohol level of .12 or more. The trial is scheduled to begin the first week in May. The defense was granted a continuance because the trial was set to begin at the end of February. | | |  | |
