Pope taken to hospital
Pope John Paul was rushed to hospital Tuesday night after he suffered an inflammation of the throat and had difficulty breathing while battling the flu, the Vatican said. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the decision to take the 84-year-old pontiff to hospital was "mainly a precaution." [ Full story ]
Students aboard study cruise ship describe ordeal after storm 
Lauren Osgood watched as waves and flecks of sea spray licked at the glass on the door. Computers, library books and furniture crashed to the floor and were flung against the walls as the ship leaned like a massive metronome from port to starboard and back again. 
Man pleads guilty to bestiality 
A man caught trying to have sex with a dog told police he did it because he had been wrongfully convicted of sexually abusing a child and wanted to do something bad if he was going to jail. Christopher Pye pleaded guilty last month to bestiality. He was also convicted in provincial court last year of sexual assault on a nine-year-old girl. 
B.C. doctor suspended for two years for countersigning U.S. prescriptions 
A doctor will lose his livelihood for two years because he countersigned prescriptions so U.S. patients could get cheaper medicine. Dr. Daljit Singh Herar of suburban Surrey admitted to being guilty of infamous conduct for not seeing the patients face to face before signing prescriptions, failing to keep proper records and then lying about it. 
IOC president blasts NHL players 
The president of the International Olympic Committee waded into the NHL labour dispute Tuesday, taking a slash at the locked-out players. During a luncheon speech Jacques Rogge compared what an Olympic champion receives to the salary of an NHL player. 
Backbencher Sahota given cabinet seat 
Patty Sahota, a backbencher since the 2001 election, was given a seat in Premier Gordon Campbell's cabinet Tuesday as the minister of state for resort development. 

Restored funding for legal aid 'dumping money' for votes, claims NDP's James 
The B.C. government is boosting the legal aid budget by $4.6 million to help people dealing with high-conflict family disputes. The increase comes three years after the government cut legal aid funding by $34 million. 

IOC boss sees protests on city visit 
The president of the International Olympic Committee got an eyeful of protesters during part of his walkabout in the city to check on the progress on the 2010 Winter Olympics. 


North Vancouver woman accidentally killed by husband in Arizona 
A man accidentally ran over and killed his wife while the couple was on a visit to Arizona, police said. Phyllis Craver of North Vancouver, B.C., was killed Sunday when she was helping her husband, Charles, park their RV.

In what police are describing as a bizarre display of road rage, a Parksville man in his 70s was assaulted for refusing to get into a race with a younger driver. 
Arena delays not costing ratepayers 
For every month that completion of Victoria's arena is delayed, the city is forgoing revenue of about $35,000 from sources such as ticket sales, community ice rental time and operating fees.

The penis in the middle of a small-town controversy has been hammered out of the public eye. Vandals attacked the appendage on a nude statue erected in middle of Penticton, B.C.'s, roundabout at the entrance to the marina area.

Abuse victims' lawyer asks court to certify lawsuit against government 
A class-action lawsuit against the B.C. government should be allowed to proceed because the province has effectively accepted responsibility for years of abuse at the centre, says a lawyer who wants a judge to certify the suit. 
Logging truck hits passenger train near Edmonton 
A Via Rail passenger train was knocked off its tracks Monday when a logging truck slammed into it broadside at a marked crossing west of Edmonton. There were no serious injuries in the 1:30 p.m. crash, 140 kilometres west of Edmonton. 


U.S. company hopes to launch world's first male contraceptive implant 
A private American company hopes to revolutionize birth control by launching the world's first implantable male contraceptive. Dr. Neil Pollock, co-founder of Shepherd Medical Company, told a news conference Monday that the Intra Vas Device, or IVD, is less invasive than a vasectomy but just as effective.  Sound Off! 


Foul play investigated in elderly woman's death outside Oakridge Safeway 
Vancouver police are investigating what might be the city's second homicide of the year, after a 78-year-old woman was injured outside a local supermarket and later died in hospital. 


Education funding gets $150m boost 
The B.C. government announced the largest education funding increase in more than a decade Monday, but teachers said the Liberals need to double the $150 million boost to make up for three years of cuts.

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005 -- A Vatican statement says Pope John Paul has suffered complications from "a crisis of larynx spasms" and was hospitalized urgently. The Pope, suffering from breathing problems and the flu, was rushed to the hospital tonight in Rome.
