Environmental Principles
Philip Morris USA (PM USA) is guided by the environmental principles of its parent company, Altria Group, Inc., which include: 1) MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS: To design and maintain effective management systems consistent with the spirit and intent of these Principles. 2) COMPLIANCE: To conduct its business in accordance with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, requirements and corporate commitments. 3) ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT: To take initiatives to minimize the current and future environmental impact of its business on the land, air, water and other natural resources. 4) PACKAGING: To minimize, consistent with its business priorities, the environmental impact of its product packaging while maintaining the integrity of its products. 5) INNOVATION: To undertake and commission research and development consistent with its business priorities in order to minimize its environmental footprint and to foster solutions to environmental issues. 6) PUBLIC POLICY: To constructively engage with representatives of industry, government and civil society to anticipate environmental issues and to promote the development of shared environmental policy goals. 7) INTERNAL COMMUNICATION: To promote environmental awareness and individual responsibility among its employees through education and training and to recognize and reward achievements and continuous improvement. 8) STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT: To build trust, credibility and meaningful relationships with its consumers, business partners and other stakeholders through its environmental commitment, performance and expectations. 9) ALIGNMENT: To periodically evaluate these Principles and ensure that they remain consistent with and supportive of the Altria family of companies' policies and objectives. PM USA works with community organizations and government agencies to address environmental issues and to reduce waste from cigarette products. Programs that PM USA supports include clean-up campaigns for beaches, parks and other public venues. PM USA also provides financial support to programs that increase public awareness about the environmental and economic impact of improper disposal of consumer-product waste. Environmental Facts at a Glance - The Altria family of companies has been making environmental contributions since 1956, when we provided a grant to help create Keep America Beautiful.
- In calendar year 2002, PM USA recycled over 28,000 tons of solid waste materials.
- In 2002, PM USA recycled over 55 tons of lead acid batteries and nearly 15 tons of spent fluorescent tubes and other lighting fixtures containing elemental mercury.
- PM USA works with the local Richmond Goodwill Industries to recycle used computer and electronic equipment. When computer systems are upgraded, the old equipment is electronically purged. Goodwill Industries sells the computers to generate cash for its many programs.
