2006 Honda Indy V-8 Engine:
  • Honda's engine for the 2006 IRL IndyCar Series is designated the HI6R Series Indy V-8. This engine is a development of the two-time IRL Manufacturers' Championship winning design created in partnership with Ilmor Engineering and introduced at the 2004 Indianapolis 500, when IRL rules reduced engine displacement to 3.0 liters.

  • Modifications introduced to the HI6R for 2006 will provide a longer service life between rebuilds, reducing the cost of racing for IndyCar teams.

  • Andretti Green Racing's Dan Wheldon won an IndyCar record six times to claim the Drivers' Championship, including the Indianapolis 500 and at Honda's Twin Ring Motegi Circuit; teammate Tony Kanaan won twice and finished second. Dario Franchitti was another two-race winner, while Bryan Herta and Delphi Fernandez Racing's Scott Sharp also posted race wins. Breakout star Danica Patrick won both Indy 500 and season Rookie-of-the-Year honors.

  • Honda won its first IRL title in 2004, winning 14 of 16 events. Kanaan was the drivers' champion with three wins, followed by teammate Wheldon, also with three victories. Rahal Letterman Racing's Buddy Rice was third in the championship with three wins, including the Indianapolis 500. Fernandez Racing owner/driver Adrian Fernandez was another three-time race winner, and teammate Kosuke Matsuura was both Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year.

  • The HI6R will be used by all teams in the 2006 IRL IndyCar Series, with technical support provided by both Honda Performance Development and Ilmor Engineering, Inc.
