Kos Pharmaceuticals Acquisition Fact Sheet
Abbott has acquired Kos Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company that develops and markets proprietary medications for the treatment of chronic cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory diseases. With the addition of Kos, Abbott strengthens its presence in cardiovascular medicine, including lipid management.
About the Acquisition
On December 15, 2006, Abbott completed its acquisition of Kos Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company that develops and markets proprietary medications for the treatment of chronic cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory diseases. With the acquisition, Abbott strengthens its presence in the $20 billion lipid management market – the largest global pharmaceutical segment.
Stronger Presence in Lipid Management
Abbott’s broad lipid management portfolio now includes:
- TriCor® (fenofibrate tablets) – a lipid-lowering agent used to treat abnormal lipid levels in the bloodstream, including cholesterol and triglycerides.
- Niaspan® (niacin extended-release tablets) – an extended-release niacin product that raises HDL, or good cholesterol levels and also helps manage other lipids.
- Advicor® (niacin extended-release / lovastatin tablets) – a combination Niaspan / lovastatin product that treats patients with multiple lipid disorders.
- A new Niaspan Caplet Formulation is currently under U.S. Food and Drug Administration review.
- Simcor®, a fixed-dose combination of Niaspan and simvastatin (generic Zocor®), which is expected to be submitted for regulatory review in the United States in the first half of 2007.
- A next-generation fenofibrate, ABT-335, in late-stage development.
- A TriCor or ABT-335/Crestor® development program with AstraZeneca announced in July 2006.

Additional Marketed Products
The acquisition also brings Abbott several additional on-market products, including:
- Azmacort® (triamcinolone acetonide) – an inhaled corticosteroid used for the maintenance treatment of asthma.
- Cardizem® LA (diltiazem HCl) – is indicated for chronic stable angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
- Teveten® (eprosartan mesylate) / Teveten® HCT (eprosartan mesylate / hydrochlorothiazide) – are indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

In the Pipeline
The acquisition also brings Abbott additional products in the development pipeline, including:
- Flutiform™, currently in late-stage development for asthma;
- Icatibant, currently in late-stage development for hereditary angioedema; and
- An inhaled insulin product, which will complement Abbott's significant presence in the diabetes care market.
