Principal Financial Group Introduces Cancer Care Program
Feb. 21, 2007 (Des Moines, Iowa) — The Principal Financial Group® health plan members now have a new partner in their fight against cancer, the Principal Cancer Care Program. The oncology program is the latest addition to Principal HealthyConnections, a comprehensive care program focused on personalized support for health plan members. Through the Principal Cancer Care Program, members are paired with nurses who provide a better understanding of the cancer diagnosis, plan benefits and treatment options.
"In addition to the physical suffering, serious illness creates emotional strain on individuals and their families. With that in mind, we've designed a program that takes advantage of our disease management expertise to address the special needs of our members with cancer," said Audrey Vaughn, second vice president of Wellness and Medical Management for the Principal Financial Group. "Through the Principal Cancer Care Program, members partner with a dedicated care management team and receive personalized support throughout their treatment."
A team of specially trained nurses, working solely on the Principal Cancer Care Program, assists health plan members throughout the duration of their cancer treatment. Each member receives a dedicated nurse who helps the member locate quality providers, track their treatment plan and any possible side effects, and identify questions to ask their physicians. Nurses also work with members to provide guidance in understanding health plan benefits and navigating the healthcare system.
"Members want more than just information; they need someone who can help them understand their diagnosis and treatment plan. We support our members throughout their treatment to help them take charge of their health," noted Vaughn.

The Principal Cancer Care Program is part of Principal HealthyConnections, which gives members access to hands on coaching and information to help them lead a healthy life. Principal HealthyConnections includes onsite wellness screening programs, personalized one-one counseling, preventive care and ongoing education. Members have access to an online library of health and wellness news, cost and quality decision tools and information about managing specific conditions or procedures. A prenatal care program, hospital care coordination, disease management and a number of other services are available to those needing specialized care.
