How to detect osteoporosis

Knowing your risks and taking care of your health are an important part of caring for your bones. A bone density scan is an exam that measures your actual bone mass. Your score along with other risk factors will help determine if you are at risk for fracture.

For women who are younger than 65 and past menopause, the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a bone density scan if you have either a risk factor or have experienced a fracture. The scan itself is simple and painless. Taking this noninvasive test can help you stay on top of your overall bone health and help you take steps to prevent a broken bone.

How do you prepare?
Preparing for a bone density test is easy.

  • You can eat and drink regularly
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing
  • Don't wear jewelry or clothing with metal hardware

How exactly does this machine work?
After you lie down, an arm passes over your body, reading your bone density in different areas. You don't feel anything. The scanning arm will not touch you or your clothing. Your results may not be available right away. It's important to follow up with your doctor afterwards so that he or she can explain your results to you.

Understanding your results
The results of a bone density scan are called a "T-score." Understanding your bone density results can be confusing. That's why we've included a chart for you to follow.

Your doctor will look at your T-score along with other risk factors to determine if you are at risk for fracture due to osteoporosis.

If your bone density is low, diet and exercise may not be enough to prevent fracture. Your doctor may recommend a treatment option like ACTONEL.

You should not take ACTONEL if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, if you have low blood calcium (hypocalcemia), have kidneys that work poorly, or cannot stand or sit upright for 30 minutes. Stop taking ACTONEL and tell your doctor if you experience difficult or painful swallowing, chest pain, or severe or continuing heartburn, as these may be signs of serious upper digestive problems. Follow dosing instructions carefully to lower the chance of these events occurring. Side effects are generally mild or moderate and may include back, muscle, bone or joint pain, stomach pain or upset, or constipation. Contact your doctor if symptoms are severe.
