Email on a great phone

A guide to email on Symbian OS phones for mobile professionals and small businesses

Nokia 6680 and Sony Ericsson P910

A Symbian OS phone is the only device you need to stay connected to friends, family and business contacts. Today large organizations, small business users and mobile professionals can choose from a vast range of phones and solutions based on Symbian OS. All deliver the functionality customers need, whatever the resources at their disposal:

  • Push email â?? fully functional corporate Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange email
  • Calendar and contacts â?? access and update your corporate calendar and personal address book
  • Attachments â?? download, view and edit on the move
  • Multiple email accounts â?? with built-in storage for 1000s of email messages.

Business issues to consider

Set-up

There are various options available to business users. These will depend on their business needs: number of employees, existing infrastructure, budgets and IT integration expertise. These are the three main approaches for setting up email access to Symbian OS phones:

Out-of-the-box

Symbian OS phones support POP3, IMAP4 and â??always-on' mode IMAP4 email protocols. They are easily configurable by short message service (SMS) via your phone manufacturer or operator website. This gives users the ability to:
  • work both on-line and off-line with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) mailboxes
  • access your web-based email through the browserprovided on your phone.

Operator hosted

The network operator hosts the email infrastructure, manages the service and provides support, while the userâ??s company makes a secure outbound connection through a firewall to the operator-managed server. This gives users the ability to:

  • get email push updates instantly with ISP or Microsoft Exchange/Lotus Notes.

Recommended solutions are available from these Symbian partners:

  • Visto â?? Visto Mobile Mail
  • RIM â?? BlackBerry Connect for Symbian OS
  • Seven Smartner â?? Duality
  • Intellisync â?? Mobile Suite.

IT department-managed

Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes are available for Symbian OS enabling the company IT department to completely control the solution end-to-end. Overall running costs are determined by the company's mobile data tariff. This gives users the ability to:

  • get email push updates instantly with ISP or Microsoft Exchange/Lotus Notes.

Recommended solutions are available from these Symbian partners:

  • DataViz (connection with Microsoft Exchange)
  • CommonTime (connection with Lotus Notes).

Security: Internet-grade or corporate?

Small businesses should use POP3 as a starting point. For email within a business, security can be enhanced by enabling POP3 mailbox connection over SSL. This is an available option on the Nokia 9300 and 9500.

Push email vendors offer end-to-end security for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes connections. This level of security meets industry standards for most small-to-medium size businesses.

Handset: best fit?

While every Symbian OS phone can run email not every user will choose the same mobile phone form factor to fit their needs. For frequent email writing and attachment editing, choose a form factor with a full QWERTY keyboard or handwriting recognition and large screen such as the Sony Ericsson P910 or Nokia 9300 and 9500.

For mainly viewing and little editing, a compact one-handed oriented design such as the Nokia 6680 and Panasonic X800 is ideal.
