On this date in 1929, Seminole Golf Club in North Palm Beach, Fla., a Donald Ross masterpiece, opened for play. It became Ben Hogan's favorite winter port of call, and the course he uses to prepare for The Masters. 1938 - The Federal Trade Commission orders eight manufacturers and the PGA of America to end their practice of golf ball price-fixing.
1947 - The U.S. Golf Association revises the Rules of Golf, editing the number of rules from 61 to 21. The Royal & Ancient does not join the effort.
1953 - Babe Zaharias wins a controversial Sarasota Women's Open by a seven-stroke margin. Playing partner Louise Suggs refuses to sign the scorecard after Zaharias was given a beneficial ruling on the 15th hole.
1976 - Jack Nicklaus wins his second Tournament Players Championship (which is now known as The Players Championship) by three strokes over J.C. Snead at Inverrary Golf & Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Nicklaus shoots a final-round 65 for a 19-under-par 269 total.
1977 - The PGA of America announces a sudden-death playoff format for the PGA Championship will be used beginning with this year's tournament.
1981 - Andy Bean, who is still under treatment for a dislocated bone in his left hand, wins the Bay Hill Classic by seven strokes over Tom Watson
1987 - Lanny Wadkins wins the Doral-Ryder Open beating Seve Ballesteros, Don Pooley and Tom Kite by three strokes.
1992 - Fred Couples beats Davis Love III in a playoff to win the Nissan Open.
On the European Tour, Jose Maria Olazabal wins the Turespana Open Mediterrania, beating countryman Jose Rivero by two strokes.
1998 - Billy Mayfair surprises everyone by beating Tiger Woods in a playoff to win the Nissan Open. The reason for everyone's surprise was the fact that the playoff hole was a par 5, which many thought would give a big advantage to Woods.
Jose Maria Olazabal must like this date, as he wins for the second time on it, capturing the Dubai Desert Classic by three over Stephen Allan.
On the LPGA Tour, Karrie Webb wins the Australian Ladies Masters by five over Hyun-Soon Park and Annika Sorenstam for what would be the first of three straight wins in the event.
BORN ON THIS DAY
Dinah Shore, the only non-player in the LPGA Hall of Fame, was born in 1917. A singer, she went on to become a television personality, and in 1971 she helped start an LPGA event in Palm Springs, Calif. The tournament today is called the Nabisco Championship, but before this year it had been named after her. She died in 1994.
Howell Fraser, winner of the first PGAClub Professional Championship in 1968, was born in 1940.
Dave Barr, two-time winner on the PGA Tour, was born in Kelowna, British Columbia, in 1952. Barr has won 12 times on the Canadian Tour.
Alice Ritzman, who has played on the LPGA Tour since 1978, was born in Kalispell, Mont., in 1952.
Alicia Dibos, who has played on the LPGA Tour since 1993, was born in Lima, Peru, in 1960.
