Homestead National Monument of America National Park Service Living Homesteader Project Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice, Nebraska, is seeking assistance in locating people who filed claims under the Homestead Act of 1862, which was not repealed in Alaska until 1986. The goal of the Living Homesteader Project is to locate and record the experiences of many of the remaining homesteaders before the opportunity is lost. Another goal is to bring together and coordinate a group of historians from across the United States to capture the knowledge and experiences held by living homesteaders — both those who succeeded in their claims and those who did not succeed. The scholars will determine what vital information is needed from these living homesteaders and design oral history questions. Oral histories will be taken under the direction of one or more of these scholars with the assistance of college history students from the University of Nebraska and Grand Valley State University, Michigan. One important outcome from this information will be the launching of scholarly writings based on the scholars’ area of study and information obtained from the living homesteaders. Depending on funding, Homestead National Monument of America hopes to bring a number of the living homesteaders to the dedication of our new Heritage Center in the spring of 2007, when many of the oral histories can be recorded.
