  • kingsnake.com turns 10!

    Friday, February 2. 2007

kingsnake.com turns 10 years old this week, on Feb. 7. It sure doesn't feel like 10 years since I started the website.

Back then, few of our users had even heard of the internet, much less logged in. Back then, it took a lot of convincing to get people to see that the internet was more than a fad. Many herpers didn't even have computers, few had internet access, and almost no one had a web page or a digital camera. Somebody that started reading kingsnake.com at the age of 8 is now 18, and could be selling his snakes in our classifieds.

I'd like to thank at least some of the people who have been most important to the development of kingsnake.com over the last ten years.

First, I want to thank my parents, John and Evelyn Barringer, who did not have me committed when I quit my long term career job at Compaq Computers to run a reptile website, or arrested for raiding their fridge in the early "lean" days. I know you had your doubts, and I may still need some time in a rubber room, but we are still here - Compaq is not. My parents and my siblings have always been there to help me, guilt me, prod me, and push me along.

Gerry Salmon and Joe Forks are important because without their assistance and the use of their massive photo collections back in 1994, the Alterna Page, my first web site, would not have existed, and I would probably still be known as "1 800 Barringer" Joe was also our first staffer, serving as the webmaster of kingsnake for a year in the early days.

I want to thank our third staffer, Clint Gilders, and his wife Andrea. Now a director in the company, Clint has gone from barely hacking out html code to running a 15-server farm, learning unix back to front, as well as keeping our technology - such as our dbase design - current, and managing our transition to PHP and CSS, all on his own. Without his wife's infinite patience he would have had to go get a real job long ago.

I want to thank all of our staffers, from Kevin Hanley in production to Melanie Martinez in the bookstore. All the classified monitors and forum moderators who volunteer on site who do so much for nothing, and get slagged endlessly for it, even though they help to keep the site clean and safe. Christie Keith, our other director, who brought the volunteers and the infrastructure over from VIN when they closed their pet care community, and Ginger Sanders who runs all those vols, they all get a big thanks as well.

John Cherry Sr. who first recognized that the way to pay the bills was to turn kingsnake into a business. Dave and Tracy Barker for suggesting we could actually charge for the classifieds service. Dave Doherty, who suggested that if we charge, we do it in an organized fashion. The person in our classifieds, who shall go nameless for his own safety, who told me it was pointless to have rules if they weren't enforced, and to enforce them fairly and evenly. Ron Tremper and Ric Blair for being some of my first customers, even though I had to teach them what it was all about.

Everyone who has ever been a member of ETHS for allowing me to speak and putting us on the cover of their annual symposium waaaay back in 1998, helping us explain for the first time in public our plans for constructing a huge reptile community, and for nodding like they understood what I was talking about, even if they didn't. LLL Reptile and Big Apple, who have been major, major supporters and sponsors of our site since almost day one, and without whom in the early days it's questionable we'd have had enough to keep the lights on. Wayne Hill of the Daytona Expo and everyone at the NARBC (Bob, Sherry and Brian) for allowing us to be sponsors of their shows. Scott Solar at Amazon Reptile Center for allowing me to vent all the time. Marshall Meyers at PIJAC for lending me his ear, and all the boys over at USF&W for not subpoenaing me too often.

Last year kingsnake.com delivered over a QUARTER BILLION PAGE VIEWS. There are major media outlets that spend millions of dollars and have staffing in the hundreds and thousands that are not as popular. Using Alexa to show how popular kingsnake.com is compared to other more mainstream media sites you can see that this is quite an achievement.

What the staff, the volunteers, our sponsors, and our users have done, creating this community, is unbelievable.

This new century will bring incredible technological changes to all of our lives, things we can't even imagine yet. We plan on being here to help bring them around, and hope that the next 10 years will be as exciting and as interesting as the first 10.

Thank you for your continued patronage.

Saying goodbye to 2006; Looking forward to 2007

    Monday, January 1. 2007

It's hard enough to believe that a year has already gone by so quickly - but 10 years?

kingsnake.com turns 10 years old in February, and we're celebrating with a number of substantial changes to all our communities.

MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC! Yes, we will dive even further into the music world with our club kingsnake site with more reviews, interviews, and both video and audiocasts. We will continue to explore the interaction between reptiles and rock and roll, and we will continue to seek out interesting tattoo photos as well.

As the site gels more, we keep adding features (such as the new music forums), and will be launching a new series of contests, including an even bigger and better photo contest. If you haven't checked lately, our music photo gallery now has more than 15,000 concert photos. Last year's photo contest really perked up the variety with everyone from Slayer to the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osborne, Van Halen and tons and tons of other bands and artists. Take a look at the gallery for more

We continue to seek out people interested in writing about music, taking concert pictures, videotape interviews, and the like. If you ever wanted to say "I'm with the press," get concert tickets, CDs, DVDs, and special access, heck sometimes even meet famous people, then we may have a role for you. We are especially looking for people in high school and college journalism classes, but hey, if you can write or take good pictures, we'll find a place for you. We also have some technical and administrative roles to fill, so if you want to help out, let us know. We are especially looking for people in the following areas:

    • Seattle, WA
    • Los Angeles, CA (Southern California)
    • Chicago, IL
    • New York, NY
    • Vancouver B.C., Canada
kingsnake Canada and kingsnake Europe are going away We will be closing our geo sites and rolling such features as the forums, classifieds and business directory listings into our main sites. Our analysis has shown that we have far more European and Canadian users on our main site than the smaller sites and our ad serving technology will allow us to target banner advertising to a geographical level soon, negating our need for a separate site. These sites will close within the first two weeks of the new year, so watch for your features to move/return to the main kingsnake.com site shortly.

New site designs Perhaps the most significant change will be the complete redesigns of our web sites to take advantage of technological improvements both to our hardware and software systems in our server farm, and the upgraded hardware and software capabilities of your desktops. Most noticeable will be that we are increasing page width to utilize most of a 1024 pixel screen. Less obvious will be improvements such as the use of cascading style sheets, more databases, improvements to the registration and login systems, and upgraded feature sets to existing platforms such as your user profile . Our design goals are to improve the look and feel of the site, while improving its functionality and navigation, and still feel "familiar" enough to not get lost.

We plan on implementing the new site designs as early as the end of first quarter 2007, and the upgrade will continue through the end of second quarter (March-June 2007).

New banner ad size specifications The new site design will require that we significantly alter our existing banner sizes and specification, locations, and in some cases availability. Some banners are going away completely, some will be in new locations, but ALL banners will need to be modified to the new specs when released. Specs should be released at the end of January with implementation beginning in late February, early March (planned). The new banner ad specifications will conform to the IAB standardized banner sizes. Please do not begin modifying your banners until the specifications are released, as the designs and placement will not be determined until then.

Changes to sponsorships We will changing our text sponsorships based on the new site and page designs, but as yet are unsure what specific changes will be implemented. Specifications and placement options will be released at the end of January as well, once the site designs are firmer.

New features We will continue experimenting both with our own and a few select user submitted videos, and we are also reviewing several other interesting features as well. Plans are now in the works to interview numerous noted herpers, a celebrity or two, to take a number of field trips to see some reptiles in the wild, and to visit some zoos and breeding facilities. Keep an eye on the site for more details.

Changes to the classifieds In an effort to improve our vendor screening process, we will be implementing what is known as "Registered Business" program. People wishing to advertise as a business or using a business name will need to be able to document that they have legally registered their business name with the appropriate governmental agencies to our staff. In the majority of cases this can be done online, as most states now have business registration information available. Further details about this program will be released as we get closer to the implementation date. Bottom line, though: if you haven't legally registered your business name yet do so now, because in the near future it will be a requirement if you want to use it here.

Changes to the laws Recent changes in the law now REQUIRE us to maintain copies all documentation we receive and send, and everything that is posted to our websites and make it available upon subpoena. We have already been doing this for years but please consider this your formal notice that by law we archive everything posted to our web sites and everything that our staff emails or receives and this information is available to anyone with a legally issued subpoena whether they be law enforcement or otherwise. These documents are available to anyone enforcing wildlife laws, business code violations, trademark or copyright infringement, or even civil contract disputes. Please keep this in mind using our systems and emailing our staff.

Events we are scheduled to attend We will be attending a number of trade shows and events this year, as well as having a booth or sponsoring others. For 2007 you will see us for sure at the following:
    • NARBC Reptile Expo & Sale in Arlington, Texas - - Feb 17-18, 2007
    • SXSW Music/Film/Interactive 2007 in Austin, Texas - - March 9-18, 2007
    • International Herpetological Symposium in Toronto, Ontario - - June 20-23, 2007
    • National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona Beach, Florida - - August 18-20, 2007
    • NARBC Reptile Expo & Sale in Anaheim, California - - Sept 8-9, 2007
    • NARBC Reptile Expo & Sale in Tinley Park, Illinois - - October 13-14, 2007

The staff and volunteers of OnlineHobbyist.com would like to wish all of our users and sponsors a safe and prosperous new year.

    Paypal Migration Starting This Week

    Thursday, October 5. 2006

We have begun to migrate our online payment systems away from the Paypal system and to our own secure server system this week. Currently we accept Visa/Mastercard and American Express. Next week we will be able to accept Discover.

The Open Invoice Payment system and Classified Registration/Renewal system have already been converted to the new secure servers, with the balance of our systems to be converted over the next 2 weeks. Once this has been done we will no longer be able to accept Paypal payments.

    Discontinuing Paypal Service

    Monday, August 14. 2006

Due to policy conflict issues between Paypals security department and our Account Review department regarding our ability to investigate and prosecute fraudulent transactions processed through Paypal's system, and issues relating to continuing problems from relying solely on Paypal to process our online payments, we will have no choice but to discontinue accepting Paypal payments in the very near future. This is unfortunate as we had hoped that with Paypal's experience with their parent company (EBay), eventually they would offer some neat tools that we could integrate on site for our thousands of vendors that use Paypal to process their payments.

We are currently reviewing other payment solutions such as Google's new Checkout payment service, as well as more traditional credit card processors. It is likely that we will begin transitioning to the new payment system at some time in September once a decision has been made and the secure processing systems implemented. For the time being we will continue to process payments using Paypal until the new system has been thouroughly tested and the switchover has occured.

This of course will have no impact on your businesses ability to accept payment via Paypal for your own goods and services, it just means you won't be able to use it to pay for services here with our business in the near future and we will be unlikely to be implementing any Paypal specific features in our communities.

We apologize in advance to our users, clients, and vendors for any inconvenience this may cause.

    Denial of Service

    Thursday, July 27. 2006

Today we experienced a temporary slowdown due to a Denial of Service attack against one of our servers.

We were able to trace the offending servers and contacted their owners. They were very helpful and immediately set to work repairing the problem. Due to the nature of the attack we suspect that a group of their servers were compromised and remotely controlled 'bots' installed. These were used to send a massive amount of requests to our server which slowed it down significantly.
