Common Name(s) Mexican Milksnake
Family Colubridae. Typical snakes. Highly variable, typically non-venomous (some have enlarged rear fangs and toxin saliva) and with large, regular scales on head (reduced in burrowing species).
Genus Lampropeltis. Kingsnakes. The name Lampropeltis translates to "shiny shield", most likely refering to their shiny, smooth scales.

  About Lampropeltis triangulum annulata
  Description: Ringed in black and light yellow with red saddle-shaped blotches, which appear to be rings at first glance. Snout is prominently black. Belly black. Scales smooth, in 19-23 rows. Anal plate single.
  Breeding: Mates in spring. Eggs are laid from June to July in rotting logs or other woodland debris. Young appear from August through September.
  Habitat: Semi-arid grassland.
  Natural History: Secretive and primarily nocturnal, it is most often encountered crossing a road after a rainstorm. It is an opportunistic feeder and will consume small rodents, birds, amphibians, lizards and other snakes, including venomous species. It has a natural tolerance to many native snake venoms.
