| Q. Does Zoo Med have a showroom? |
| A. Sorry, Zoo Med doesn't have a showroom at their facilities in San Luis Obispo, CA.You can see lots of Zoo Med products at a pet store near you though. |
|
| Q. Do you offer veterinary advice? |
A. Zoo Med does not have a staff veterinarian. For that reason we do not offer veterinary advice.
We do suggest that if you have a reptile situation where the quality of life of the reptile is questionable that you contact your nearest veterinarian ASAP! We all love reptiles (and animals of any sort!) and do not want to risk their lives. It is recommended that reptile owners establish a relationship with a reptile veterinarian prior to an emergency. Veterinarians can then have a base line examination result to compare the reptiles' condition.
Money spent on a trip to the vet is worth it! The vet saves lives! |

| Q. My ReptiCare Rock Heater is too hot! Can I wrap it in a towel, sweater, T-shirt, sock, etc to make it cooler? |
| A. No, no, no! Wrapping any heating item (especially the rock heater) in a sweater will encapsulate heat. This will create a heat buildup. This is a fire hazard and a burn hazard for your reptile. The surface temperature of the rock heaters should be between 105 and 110 F. |
|
| Q. I use a ReptiCare Rock Heater for my pet. There is no other heat device in the terrarium. Is this okay? |
A. Absolutely not! A rock heater is a secondary heating device. They are used to raise the belly temperature to facilitate the digestive processes performed by microbes in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Under no circumstance should a rock heater be used as the only heat device. The reptile will get extremely cold and will sit on the rock heater to get warm. When less than 75% of your pets? body is dramatically warmer than the rest they could receive thermal burns to their sensitive insides.
Zoo Med recommends using a Ceramic Heat Emitter, or a Repti Infrared Heat Bulb, and Under Tank Heater as a primary heat source. The Ceramic Heat Emitters can last up to five years and is well worth the money. |
|
| Q. I have heard horror stories about reptiles being burnt by rock heaters. I am scared to use them. What can I do to aid the digestion without using a rock heater? |
| A. An alternative to using a rock heater is to aim a basking bulb (Zoo Med's Repti Basking Spot Bulb) at a flat rock. This will heat the rock up. The animal will naturally migrate to the rock to bask. As it sits on the rock soaking up the rays of the bulb the warm rock will transfer heat to their belly. This will heat the microbes up to work on the food in digestive tract. Zoo Med also makes a Deluxe Rock Heater with a built in Rheostat so you can control the temperature and ensure it?s not to hot for your animal. |
|
| Q. Can I use Zoo Med food as the only food for my reptile? |
| A. You can use Zoo Med foods as the only food. But would you want to have canned soup for every meal? I am sure your reptile wouldn't want to have canned food everyday. A combination of fresh/live food with the Zoo Med food and a good vitamin (Reptivite by Zoo Med!) is always a good way to start. |
|
| Q. How long does the canned food last after opening? |
| A. By putting the food in an airtight plastic container the food will last up to two weeks. (I have heard that it lasts up to a month from customers who have called, but I have never had the food last that long.) |
|
| Q. Can I use my ReptiTherm Under Tank Heater (UTH) with a plastic/wood/acrylic/metal cage? |
| A. Using the ReptiTherm Under Tank Heater (UTH) on anything other than glass can be a fire hazard. The only exception is our Mini sized UTH was designed to heat to a lower temperature to accommodate the plastic PAL type containers. None of our other UTHs can be used with plastic terrariums. |
