You Have Dog Breath!

According to a study by the American Veterinary Dental Society, oral disease is the number one health problem diagnosed in dogs and cats. Periodontal disease affects about 80 percent of pets over the age of three. Although regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are essential steps, home dental care has a major impact on long term dental health?not to mention the added benefit of making those sloppy, surprise kisses a lot more pleasant.

While our pets cannot tell us when they are feeling unsure about the state of their dental hygiene, there is something we, as caregivers, can do about it. Pet owners should take charge of their pet?s health and follow a few simple guidelines to ensure good, strong, healthy teeth and gums. Follow these tips to keep your pet?s pearly whites and gums healthy:

  1. Have your veterinarian examine your pet?s teeth and gums during annual visits. If plaque and tartar buildup is evident, your veterinarian may recommend a professional dental cleaning.

  2. It may not be the most pleasant task on your list of chores, but it is essential to brush your pet?s teeth regularly. Studies show that brushing is the best method of removing and preventing plaque build-up. It works for you, doesn?t it?

  3. Tossing a piece of rawhide down is a lot easier than brushing for you and your dog, but should not be used as a substitute for brushing. Dog treats have been used for many years to satisfy dog?s natural chewing needs, and the abrasive action of gnawing on rawhide helps reduce plaque, calculus and gingivitis.

  4. Some chew toys have raised tips that massage gums and help decrease plaque build-up. Chew toys also provide the necessary chewing exercise to strengthen gums and are a great way to relieve frustration, anxiety and good, ole-fashioned boredom.

  5. Finally, check your pet often for bad breath, bleeding or irritated gums, tartar buildup or oral pain. Nothing beats getting down on the floor and poking around your dog?s chompers. If you find anything fishy, seek veterinary assistance.
