Rob Lowe and Calista Flockhart play lovers and co-workers on "Brothers & Sisters."
Ally McBeal's alter ego returns to the tube in an ensemble drama about a dysfunctional family. When "Brothers & Sisters" premiered this fall, a lot of critics predicted the show was in trouble because of all the changes in cast and production that took place before the series made it to the air. But the show about a dysfunctional family in Los Angeles has gone on to prove them wrong, and is one of the few new fall dramas that has succeeded in consistently finding an audience.
CALISTA FLOCKHART, RACHEL GRIFFITHS, SALLY FIELD and PATRICIA WETTIG form the distaff side of the cast; while BALTHAZAR GETTY, DAVE ANNABLE, MATTHEW RHYS, JOHN PYPER-FERGUSON and RON RIFKIN raise the testosterone level. Oh yes, and ROB LOWE has joined the cast in the recurring role of Senator McCallister, Calista's new boss and love interest.
"Rob is really lovely," the former "Ally McBeal" star tells ET, who goes on to talk about the difference between Kitty Walker, a staunch Republican in a family of Democrats, and the liberal Ally. "The character that I'm playing now is so fundamentally different than Ally. I definitely wanted to make a different choice. I think this show is very different. It's a very real show, and 'Ally' was sort of fantastical and a different kind of reality, and it was very high comedy. And this is, I think, funny, and yet it's just different."
It's unusual for an actor to find success with two series, and Calista admits that she didn't think in terms of that when signing on to play Kitty. "I think it's very difficult to predict what's going to happen to any show," she says. "If we knew what was going to be a hit, we'd all have hits. There's no guarantee. You go with something that you like, that you feel is right, and you hope for the best."
One thing that is definitely right, as far as the mother of six-year-old LIAM is concerned, is her new castmates.
"We're not dysfunctional at all," she says of her fellow actors. "We actually really like each other and get along really well. And I think we all have a lot of fun together."
As for working with Sally Field, who plays Nora Walker, Kitty's mother, Calista couldn't be more complimentary. "Sally's wonderful. I love working with Sally. I think she's enormously talented, obviously. I'm inspired by Sally."
"Brothers & Sisters" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
