Daktronics Introduces a New Face in Portable VMS

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Jan. 29, 2007 – Daktronics (Nasdaq-DAKT) introduced the VP-4000 sign, an innovative portable variable message sign (VMS) for work zone safety and temporary traffic control, at the American Traffic Safety Services Associations (ATSSA) Convention and Traffic Expo New Product Press Event in San Antonio Jan. 29.

Daktronics has a long history of designing and manufacturing successful solutions for the transportation industry using the latest in light emitting diode (LED) technology. The new VP-4000 sign integrates proven
technology from Daktronics permanent transportation products to produce a work zone safety trailer whose design emphasizes safety, reliability and ease of use.

According to Vic Wenner, niche manager for portable VMS systems, “We have received a lot of positive comments on the VP-4000 sign from our work zone safety customers. They are very impressed with the new appearance of the display, and the new features, especially the rear access door design. The sliding rear access doors are a major advance in ensuring the safety of highway workers, and greater protection of the sign’s electronic components. We want to ensure safer roadways by producing a product designed with the highway worker in mind.”

The VP-4000 sign has a black steel mask on the face which virtually eliminates glare, while providing increased contrast. This makes the sign easier to read in all weather and lighting conditions. The display is rotated by a worm gear mechanism, which ensures the display is always locked in place, eliminating the hazards of deploying the display in windy environments.

The VP-4000 sign is fully NTCIP-compliant (National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol) and can be controlled via modem using Daktronics Vanguard® Software or integrated into any state’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The signs can be controlled from the traffic operation center, which makes the sign an important tool in displaying Amber Alerts, evacuation routes and other emergency messages.
