 |  | | | | | | | | | | The family of stainless steels is large and varied; in fact, there are more than 100 registered types. Each of these were originally designated for some specific use. From these many types, a certain few standard stainless-types have been developed and perfected and are now in general use by both industry and government. These are the types we stock.
Stainless strip steels, like the many carbon strip steels, may be procured in either the Heat-Treatable, Non-Heat-Treatable, or Pre-Hardened types. We stock all three.
Although we do stock stainless steels other than those listed in this section, as a matter of general information we list below the three general groups of stainless and heat resisting steels.
- Martensitic - Hardenable Chromium Steels (Magnetic). This group includes types 403, 410, 414, 416, 420, 431, 440A, B and C, 501 and 502.
- Ferritic - Non-Hardenable Chromium Steels (Magnetic). This group includes types 405, 430, 430F and 446.
- Austenitic - Non-Hardenable Chromium Nickel Steels (Non-Magnetic in the annealed condition).
This group includes types 301, 302, 302B, 303, 304, 305, 308, 309. 310, 314, 316, 317, 321 and 347.
At any given time, Precision steel has no less than 11 different grades of stainless steel with hundreds of grade and temper variations in stock. There are more than fifty gages ranging from .002" up to .187" available. Widths range from .125" to 48". All products are prime materials with full chemical and mechanical certification.

FLATNESS - Because of the wide range of widths and thicknesses and the variety of tempers produced in coils and cut lengths, no flatness tolerances have been established for cold rolled stainless steel. Flatness on temper rolled stainless steel strip cannot be guaranteed.
