| | Compliance and Integrity at Altria
Altria and its companies are firmly committed to pursuing business objectives with integrity and in full compliance with the law. In 2001, Altria Group implemented major changes to strengthen our Compliance and Integrity efforts. This included appointing a Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, who developed an enterprise-wide Compliance and Integrity program led by senior officers and driven by employees worldwide. Altria Group's Board of Directors monitors and oversees this program. We made these changes back in 2001 as part of our cross-company efforts to rebuild public trust and align our companies’ behavior with societal expectations after a period of falling out of step with society on tobacco issues. From a business management perspective, we strengthened and formalized our standards and training because it makes good business sense for the future of our companies. We recognize that simply having a Compliance and Integrity program is not enough. Ultimately, it will be the actions and behavior of our companies' employees that will determine our success. Compliance and integrity is led by the compliance officers and management of Altria and its operating companies. Philip Morris International's and Philip Morris USA's compliance efforts are guided by Altria's standards for compliance and integrity. | Altria Group has developed a set of broad, far-reaching and flexible set of standards to guide each of Altria’s companies’ Compliance and Integrity efforts. |
| Each of Altria’s companies is responsible for developing an annual Compliance and Integrity plan that outlines efforts to meet corporate standards and should include a systematic risk assessment to help identify and address risks so that they do not develop into potential compliance issues. |
| The Code’s foundation is based on four questions that we ask employees to always consider before taking action: Is it legal? Even if legal, does it follow Company policy? Even if it’s legal and consistent with Company policy, is it the right thing to do? And finally, how would it look to those outside the Company? |
