What is Altria Group?

A:

Altria Group is the parent company of Philip Morris International, Philip Morris USA, and John Middleton, Inc.  Altria Group’s operating companies’ brands include: Marlboro, Virginia Slims, L&M, Lark, Parliament and Black & Mild.  In addition, Altria Group owns Philip Morris Capital Corporation, an investment company that manages a portfolio consisting of leveraged and direct finance leases.  Altria Group also has a 28.6% economic and voting interest in SABMiller, the world’s second-largest brewer.

When was the name Altria Group first used?

A:

On January 27, 2003, Altria Group became the parent company of Kraft Foods, Philip Morris International, Philip Morris USA and Philip Morris Capital Corporation.  Previously, Altria Group was named Philip Morris Companies.  Please note that the Board of Directors of Altria Group, Inc. voted on January 31, 2007, to authorize the Spin-off of all shares of Kraft Foods, Inc. owned by Altria to Altria's shareholders.  As of March 30, 2007, Altria Group, Inc. distributed approximately 88.9% of Kraft's outstanding shares owned by Altria to Altria's shareholders of record as of 5:00 p.m Eastern Time on March 16, 2007 (the Record Date).

What does the name Altria mean?

A:

Altria is derived from the Latin word altus, and conveys the notion of "reaching ever higher."
