The Basics of Licensing and Trademarks


If you'd like to license Dolby technologies for use, there are 4 types to choose from.

To license Dolby technologies for use in consumer products, such as DVD players and HDTVs, or professional products, (such as studio equipment), you will need a System License. More

To license Dolby technologies for use in professional products, integrated circuits, or software, you will need an Implementation License. More

If you are creating a motion picture, you will need a Motion Picture Service Agreement (MPSA). More

A Dolby Trademark Agreement is required to:

  • Indicate with a Dolby trademark that your recorded audio content, such as TV broadcasts, games, DVDs, music, is encoded with Dolby technologies
  • Use Dolby trailers at the beginning of broadcasts, games, and video programs such as DVDs.

A separate, royalty-free agreement must be signed for each technology prior to use of the corresponding Dolby trademark. More
