Define Utility Computing

Utility Computing is a business model for computing in which resources (CPU power, storage space, etc.) are made available to the user on an as-needed basis. The goal of the utility computing model is to maximize the efficient use of computing resources and minimize user costs. Users are able to dial up or dial down usage in real time, to meet the varying demands of business.

Is the $1/CPU-hr Sun Grid Right for You?

What is a CPU-hr?

For each job you submit and run, your Sun Grid CPU usage is aggregated and then rounded up to the nearest whole hour. For example, if your job used 1000 CPUs for one minute, it would be aggregated as 1000 CPU minutes or 16.67 CPU hours. The software rounds this up to 17 hours and the job would be billed as US $17.

Pay-per-Use Computing

Sun CEO explains how Sun Grid can help you quickly solve complex computational problems and speed time to results without owning and operating your own data center.

Customer Spotlight: Brookhaven National Laboratory

Physicists working on the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory have turned to Network.com to run simulations using its StarSim application. STAR tracks the thousands of particles produced by ion collisions at the laboratoryâ??s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, searching for quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a form of matter that is believed to have last existed just after the Big Bang, at the dawn of the universe. The STAR experiment involves accumulating and analyzing millions of images of ion collisions, a process that is both computing-intensive and data-intensive.

Sun and Brookhaven National Laboratory have been asked to present their partnership at the International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP 2007). Taking place in September, the CHEP conference provides an international forum to exchange information on computing experience and needs for the community, and to review recent, ongoing, and future activities.
