Download the Val Camonica Pieces by David Young, a heterogenous collection of works for diverse ensembles and soloists created over a ten-year period in response to the composer?s experience of the huge collection of rock carvings scattered across northern Italy?s Camonica Valley.
Earlier this year, six Val Camonica pieces were presented together for the first time by Aphids in association with the Libra Ensemble as part of Full Tilt at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. ABC Classic FM took this opportunity to bring the ensemble into the studio to record the collection which we and the artists now offer to you as a series of free downloads.
The first in our collection of six free downloads is the solo violin piece ?Animali?. Click on the link below to go to the ?Animali? page where you can download the recording and the full score of this striking work for solo violin.

The music of David Young is presented here as interpreted by an outstanding group of Melbourne-based and international musicians.
Young?s music is created through the production of elaborate hand-made scores which mix conventional music notation with pictures and other design elements to provoke surprising results from performers. To aid your enjoyment of these pieces you may like to download the score extracts provided with the pieces and follow the markings on the page as you listen to the sonic results.
The concert performances took place with a range of multimedia accompaniments including the hand-processed film art of Louise Curham. Three of her creations are presented here as special video downloads along with the audio-only mp3s. Come back next week to listen to David Young?s ?Sarcophagus? and to download the special video with film by Louise Curham.
Also part of the concert presentation was a lecture by writer/historian and Aphids collaborator Cynthia Troup. Her lecture is presented here as a pdf download for listeners who want to delve into the archaeological and historical sources of the work.
