Things are getting ugly in the days leading up to Hollywood's glitziest boozefest, the Golden Globe Awards, thanks to a simmering writers' strike and a host of sympathetic actors who have threatened to stay home.
Will we get a red carpet full of stars next Sunday—or just Andy Dick? We're following the developments minute by minute. As of this second, here's what we know.
Oh, It's On! (Maybe) The show is still technically a go for Sunday, Jan. 13. NBC announced today it still plans to broadcast something, despite widespread talk that the ceremony will be private—or even postponed à la the 2001 Emmys.
Nobody Wants to Party with Picketers: The Writers Guild says it will bring its strike to the Golden Globes bash, filling the sidewalk outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel with picketing scribes. That means if nominees like Cate Blanchett and Rose Byrne decide to go, they'll have to run a gauntlet of protesters. In their four-inch, strappy heels—which appeals to exactly no one.
With only a week to go before the Golden Globes winners are announced, now's the time to stick your neck out and make some very hard choices: George or Denzel? Tina or America? Johnny or Ryan? Nikki, Ellen or Amy?
We've made it easier for you, though. All you have to do is hit the E! Online Predictions Poll and let us know which stars truly have the golden goods.
Bonus: After voting, enter our sweepstakes for a chance to win some fancy prizes. And don't worry, we won't let Clooney know how you voted.
Take that, Golden Globes. The nominations for the Fourth Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, just out today, veer wildly from the everybody-in group hug that the Globes offered last week. Most notably, the Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild—snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which picks the Globes—snagged the most SAG noms, with four.
Another big difference: Globe faves Charlie Wilson's War, Atonement and Sweeney Todd all got, let's see here, zero SAG noms. This matters, as actors hold heavy sway with how the Academy Awards go down, and SAG's top contenders—Into the Wild, 3:10 to Yuma, American Gangster, Hairspray and No Country for Old Men—could safely be considered front-runners for Oscar's Best Picture.
In TV categories, SAG paid respect to the final season of The Sopranos (largely ignored by the Hollywood Foreign Press) and had plenty of love for Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, The Office and cable hits Dexter, Monk, Mad Men, The Closer, Entourage and Weeds.
Oh, also: Yay, Tina Fey!
Get the complete list here, or click through our gallery of notable noms. The SAG Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place Jan. 27.
Big day around here. Nominations for the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced by Quentin Tarantino, Hayden Panettiere and Ryan Reynolds—just about the only three people in town not to get a nom. E! Online had it covered, and here's what we learned:
Twelve Movies Were Nominated for Best Picture: Which, you have to admit, is an awful lot. (Read more.)
Lost and Heroes Got the Shaft: Not to mention Desperate Housewives and (save one nom each) The Office and Ugly Betty. TV Diva Kristin Dos Santos has a few ideas on why. (Read more.)
Funny thing about the Golden Globes nominations released this morning: Many of the big movie noms are, in fact, from the Future! Sure, plenty of the TV shows already sitting on your TiVo snagged noms (or didn't, as our TV Diva Kristin points out), but a huge handful of the flicks mentioned haven't even hit the megaplex.
Atonement took the most noms, with seven, but the WWII drama doesn't expand into most markets until tomorrow. And a good half of the other best picture noms—Charlie Wilson's War, The Great Debaters, There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd—won't open until at least next week.
We've got the full list of nominees right about here. But are you even going to see them, if and when they come to a theater near you?
The 65th Golden Globes are scheduled for Jan. 13 in Beverly Hills.
How's this for weird: Kanye West and his album Graduation grabbed the most Grammy nominations today, acing eight of 'em. But his megahit "Stronger" isn't in the mix for Record of the Year? Really?
Right behind him, Amy Winehouse snagged six noms with her album Back to Black. She and Kanye have some strange competition, too, for Album of the Year: Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and the Foo Fighters. E! News has the full story here.
But the money award is really Record of the Year, the hottest single. Who's gonna get it?
The 50th Annual Grammys will be handed out Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
Is Scary Spice suddenly afraid of stage diving?
Less than two weeks ago, Mel B (aka Scary Spice) told me she was looking forward to doing some stage diving during the upcoming Spice Girls reunion tour. But just last night, she admitted to having second thoughts.
“I’m in rehearsals and not quite sure about it now,” she said at last night’s DirecTV 100 HD post-Emmy bash in West Hollywood.
So, have Mel and her new husband, Stephen Belafonte, been hanging with Posh Spice and her hubby, David Beckham, now that they’re all based in Los Angeles? “We hang out loads at our houses, but tonight I’m going home,” Mel said. (FYI: The Beckhams were spotted earlier in the evening at Justin Timberlake’s concert at the Staples Center.)
Here's what else we learned last night, after the big show:
You know a party is good when celebs who aren’t even on the host network show up...especially ones who scored Emmys that night! Such was the case at HBO’s bash at the Pacific Design Center, which I dished about earlier. Winners Katherine Heigl and America Ferrera swung by, along with Kanye West and Minnie Driver. And HBO's man of the hour, Jeremy Piven, finally made it to the company bash, Emmy in hand, to hang out with his Entourage boys.
Inside the party, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing got back-to-back play, perhaps as a tribute to the Sopranos series finale episode? Most of the cast was there, including James Gandolfini, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco. Revelers celebrated with Belvedere Thai-tinis and Moët champagne flowing freely at the bars, and partygoers like Heidi Klum and Queen Latifah sampled lobster tempura, beef satay and Thai chicken toasts, the handiwork of Wolfgang Puck.
Hey party people, now that the big day is done, it's time to do good! You probably saw our TV Diva, Kristin Dos Santos, looking amazing on the carpet yesterday, and if you'd like a piece of that beauty (and a good karma hit, to boot), E! Online is auctioning her Monique Lhuillier red-carpet gown (with the belt) through Clothes Off Our Back.
If you've never heard of Clothes Off Our Back, it was founded by Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) and Bradley Whitford (Studio 60, The West Wing) to give formal wear a valuable second use after its first turn around a celebrity event. Through COOB, spectacular outfits are auctioned off to benefit children's causes around the world.
And if you're not a statuesque brunette interested in a jewel-green gown, there's plenty more where that came from! Clothes Off Our Back's 6th Annual Emmy Auction also features items donated by Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Kathy Griffin, Jean Smart and Heidi Klum. Plus, coming soon, you fellas can look for shoes, sunglasses and cuff links from the likes of Greg Grunberg and Terry O'Quinn.
What are you still standing here for? Get shoppin'!
