Goodbye, Golden Globes.

I just got word that sponsors and advertisers of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s gala are being informed as I type this that the show has been canceled. Winners will simply be announced. There won’t even be an untelevised awards show!

Industry blogger Nikki Finke first reported the final decision just moments ago. Finke writes that the HFPA and NBC honchos made the decision together.

I've been hearing from a reliable source for almost a year now that some of Britney Spears' family members believe she has bipolar disorder. They don’t think it’s drugs. They don’t feel she has a drinking problem.

In plain and simple language, they believe the former pop princess has a mental illness.

If, in fact, Ms. Spears has a bipolar illness, isn’t it time for the haters to back off? I'm talking about those who post comments on blogs that go so far as to wish her dead.

Making fun of Spears for a bad song, a poor performance or maybe even a not-so-in-shape body, I can handle. But the venom that's been spewed in the last 24 hours alone is unreal.

Why so much hate? My armchair theory is, it’s jealousy. No one is jealous of her downfall, but surely they may be envious of all she's achieved in her very young life. She wasn’t even an adult when she became one of the world’s biggest pop sensations. And she got very, very rich along the way.

Fast-forward to today. Spears is in a hospital, locked down for her own good. No one knows for sure what exactly went down last night at her house, but I don’t care how famous you are, being strapped into a gurney and thrown into an ambulance as paparazzi and news helicopters hover overheard to catch every minute detail cannot be fun in any way.

Is Britney Spears an out-of-control Hollywood celebrity, or is she suffering from something much more serious?

A source close to the family tells me family members believe the embattled pop princess may have bipolar disorder. According to the source, family members have been concerned for months because they’re under the impression that Spears has not been following doctors’ orders in treating the supposed illness.

“This was going on before the head shaving,” my source said. “She wouldn’t listen to anyone. She said she knew what she was doing.”

The source said this morning that family and friends are not surprised it has come to this. “She needs major help," I am told. "Let’s hope she will finally get it.”

Amen.

And let’s hope the new year means new healthy beginnings for Spears.

Is Britney Spears’ estranged mom, Lynne, going to be visiting her troubled daughter in the hospital?

A source tells me Lynne "has been crying all night. Everyone is so sad. She's supposedly on her way to see Britney.”

Lynne reportedly spoke to Access Hollywood: “Just say prayers,” she said when Access reached her by phone.

People magazine just reported that Britney's rarely seen older brother, Bryan, 30, is expected at the hospital sometime today. Britney’s father, Jamie, arrived at Cedars-Sinai with Brit bud Sam Lutfi late last night, and pregnant little sister Jamie Lynn was rumored to have seen her this morning.

Whether or not Lynne eventually makes a visit is up in the air. People says she and Jamie Lynne are now headed to their hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana.

Kid Rock’s sex appeal is apparently inexhaustible. When the bad-boy rocker rolled onto the red carpet at the Hotel Gansevoort for the Svedka New Year’s Eve bash in New York City, a young woman jumped into his arms for several photos (above). Kid told staffers he had no idea who the mystery brunette was. However, it looked like there was another gal at the party he was hoping to get to know. “He was interested in a dark-haired beauty decked out in a silver minidress,” an onlooker reports.
