The Flyers and Phantoms Fan Development Department has become the area's driving force behind ice hockey. Originally an information and statistics bureau, the department has expanded to include programs aimed at helping the sport to grow at all levels. With the help of corporate sponsorship, the Phantoms are able to reach out into the community and help nearly 50,000 youth hockey players every year while exposing the sport to hundreds of thousands of people on an annual basis. In addition to being a source of information about ice hockey in the Delaware Valley, the Fan Development Department runs various instructional and recreational programs, each aimed at a different level of interest. Current programs include: Flyers-Phantoms School Assembly Program The Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms are once again gearing up for the Flyers-Phantoms School Assembly Program. Focusing on students in Grades 3 through 6, the theme for the assembly is TEAMWORK. Members of the Fan Development staff, along with Flyers Ambassador of Hockey, Bob "The Hound" Kelly and Phantoms mascot Phlex, visit area schools to educate students on using teamwork to achieve goals in school, sports and at home. Kelly also talks with students about being safe when playing sports and the sport of hockey in general. The program culminates with interactive games designed to get the students and teachers more involved and offers special Flyers and Phantoms giveaways to all in attendance. In 2006-07, the School Assembly Program visited 105 schools and reached over 30,000 students. Hooked on Hockey Sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association This program is designed to reach children throughout the Delaware Valley. Hooked on Hockey's main goal is to create hockey awareness among children and teach them how they can benefit from and have fun with the sport of hockey. In support of this grassroots initiative, the Flyers and Phantoms will contribute Mylec hockey sticks to all program participants in an effort to keep kids “hooked on hockey.” Each Hooked On Hockey event will include an introduction of basic hockey fundamentals, scrimmages, skills competitions, activity books for all participants and various fun activities. Bob “The Hound” Kelly and Phlex will visit most of the events and interact with the youth participants. The Fan Development Department will schedule and visit 35 to 40 locations throughout the Delaware Valley this year. If you would like to book a Hooked on Hockey event, call (215) 952-5999 or email us at dcurrais@comcast-spectacor.com. On-ice Clinics For the 5-12 year olds, the Fan Development Department runs ice hockey clinics for youth hockey teams throughout the Delaware Valley. The department's coaching staff, along with Bob "The Hound" Kelly or a current Phantoms player, gives a one-hour clinic focusing on skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting. Each child leaves with an autographed puck and other Phantoms gifts. Flyers/Phantoms Coaching Symposium Sponsored by Verizon Wireless The Flyers and Phantoms run an annual symposium for the hockey coaches of the Delaware Valley. The symposium is designed to be one of interest to all coaches who want in-depth information on advanced coaching techniques and skills as presented by some of the top minds in the sport of hockey. Guest speakers at this year's symposium included John Stevens, Kjell Samuelsson, and Craig Berube, as well as members of the Flyers coaching staff.
Phantoms City Skates In an attempt to promote upcoming Phantoms playoff games during the 1997-98 season, the Fan Development Department created a program called City Skate. The Phantom Patrol and Phlex don in-line skates and roll into various locations across the city of Philadelphia distributing handbills and creating excitement during the lunch hour. City Skates are now being used to promote Phantoms home games nearly all season long. Phantoms Inflatable Interactive Game In an effort to reach more fans at events such as Community Days, Festivals, Fairs, etc., the Phantoms have developed an inflatable inter-active game. The inflatable game allows fans to take their best shot at beating a stationary goalie to win a prize. The game has allowed the Phantoms to reach large numbers of fans at community events throughout the Delaware Valley.
