I should be posting a blog right about now informing you about our progress in the first stage of the rally.Instead I am in the hotel in Lisbon writing this.I cannot explain or express the level of disappointment that I?m feeling right now.First word of this came from Jean Louis slecher. He came down to the underground garage where we were working on the Hummers.Even though we know who he is we didn?t believe him.Robby told us to keep working, and we did.Word of a press conference at 12:00pm that day came; we then got worried.A couple of us dashed off to the cultural center to the conference. It was true, the rally had been canceled.I think that everyone in there was stunned. There were people crying, upset and disgruntled.
We came back to the hotel to find the Hummers displayed in front of the hotel and Robby getting a 35 Euro ticket per car for having them parked there on the center divider.
There was nothing left to do, we had worked so hard for this race and it was not going to happen.Robby had a point to prove, that we were ready to compete and win this race. Both Hummers headed out to the cultural center. It had been closed all day and no vehicles were allowed to get in. We tried 2 times before we were allowed.People and media rushed to the Hummers when we pulled in.
The race cars are amazing, there are no other vehicles that can compare to them.Robby walked over to Mark Miller (he drives the Red Bull VW Toureg) and told him he was lucky.
He really is, Robby was determined to win the race. His passion to race went as far as him organizing a race here in Lisbon. He was willing to put up $100,000 of his own money as a price. That would unfortunately not happen. He flew out this morning back home to go to Daytona.I will compile video and photos of our experience here.Like I said, all of us here are so disappointed, all the man hours the guys put in to the race cars, the logistic nightmare that we have to deal with, my time taken away from work to get ready for this.Let?s not mention the vaccines!Who knows what the ASO will do now.One can only hope that we will have the chance to win next year.
It's official, the 2008 Dakar Rally has been cancelled. The news came just as Robby and Ronn were taking the Hummers to scrutineering. We are still taking the cars down there because the participants, media, fans are all still down at the Cultural Center.
I'll post more when the plans for Team Dakar USA are known but until then, here is an excerpt from the statement by the ASO. You can read the entire thing at www.dakar.com.
Lisbon, Friday the 4th of January 2008 A.S.O. cancels the 2008 edition of the Dakar rally After different exchanges with the French government - in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal?s capital.
Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 24th of December by A.S.O.linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken
Team Dakar USA landed safely in Lisbon Portugal at 7:25 am.I headed out to the cultural center this morning and received my press pass. I will post more pictures soon!

Hide This article was published recently regarding Ronn Bailey's 2008 Dakar plans:
Danger Is Part of Race?s Allure
Jamie Rector for The New York Times
With 49 deaths in 29 years, the annual Dakar Rally off-road race has been panned by the Vatican newspaper as ?the bloody race of irresponsibility.? But each year, Ronn H. Bailey is drawn to it nonetheless. Bailey, the founder and chairman of a software security firm based in Las Vegas that protects sensitive corporate and government computer systems, willingly puts himself at risk to compete in the race.
Set your DVR to catch Dakar coverage on Versus beginning January 6...
The Dakar is the world?s most grueling rally. The extreme race pits over 500 teams, consisting of both amateurs and professionals, against not only each other but the elements, including those of the Sahara desert. Covering 5,700 miles, participants driving automobiles, large trucks and motorcycles will begin the race in Lisbon, Portugal and finish in Dakar, Senegal. Coverage of the Dakar Rally will air daily on Versus from January 6th through the 21st at 6:30pm (EST) and a race recap is scheduled for the 27th at 4pm (EST).
The first deadline to ship the Team Dakar Hummers has come and gone and the trucks remain in California. "Rather than continue at the pace we were going and risk making mistakes, we have elected to delay the shipping of the race trucks." said Robby Gordon. "We have one Hummer on the dyno right now and the other one is complete. We have too much time and energy into this program so we've decided to buy a couple of extra days. We did not want to get over to Lisbon and have to do any work without the capabilities of our shop here."
As it stands right now the Hummers will ship on the 30th of December for the January 5th start of the 2008 Dakar Rally. Stay tuned!
As the road to Dakar gets closer and closer, I am starting to get excited, anxious and nervous.I was over at Robby Gordon Off-Road last night discussing video and photo marketing strategies with Rob Harris. The finishing touches were being made for both Hummers.Everybody was focused and determined to get them ready for ?shake down?.

Both Rob Harris (we call him ?BC?) and I are very enthused about this whole project.
This will be a great opportunity to bring the Dakar Rally to those who were not aware of it. We will provide you with informative race reports along with fun/behind the scenes stories and footage.
Rocker panels ready for install
The Hummers are off to a final ?shake down? today. For those who do not know what that means. It is just a minor test to check for fluid leakage and other minor issues that might arise. We will also take that opportunity to shoot the newly finished Hummers.

This morning I stopped by Team Dakar USA headquarters this to check on the progress of the Hummers. The team seams to have everything running on schedule as planned.I was pleased to see the finished body panels that were laying in the showroom floor ready for install!
The race vehicles look amazing!Robby?s Hummer keeps the green and black color scheme while Ronn Bailey?s is a new yellow and black scheme.
?Are you good?? I asked Robby, he responded ?No not really, I?ll be good when everything is done? We then proceeded to comment on the beautiful craftsmanship of the carbon fiber dashboards he was working on.

We then walked downstairs as he said: ?When the Jefe (spanish for Boss) is around things get done? I'm a witness, they really do.
My name is Ramses Perez; I am a Project manager at Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corporation. Pleased to meet me? You will be after this adventure is over. I will be keeping you and everyone that tunes in to this Blog informed and entertained throughout the 2008 Dakar Rally.
I am Robby Gordon?s main contact at Toyo. I help maintain a great professional and personal relationship between Robby and Toyo. As a sponsor, I have gotten the chance to attend many of the coveted Baja 500 and Baja 1000 races embedded along his team. For the 2007 Dakar Rally, I was able to attend the beginning of the race in Lisbon, Portugal. My Journey would end in Europe that year. That will not be the case this time. I?m in it until the end, and our target is to finish the last stage in Dakar with the overall car win!
For the 2008 edition of the Dakar Rally, I will be embedded with Team Dakar USA. My duties will include capturing video of the race, behind the scenes and every day life in the rally. I will aid in the production of Team Dakar USA?s exclusive youtube videos and photos. I will be traveling along with the team in a chase/media Hummer H1 and an ASO press plane.
I thought it was going to be a breeze preparing for Dakar. That was not the case. I have been to the Dr. several times to get vaccines in order to travel to that part of the world. I think I lost count of how many I have gotten, that reminds me, I have to go back tomorrow for more! Those vaccines hurt! They make you lethargic and fevered after you have taken them. I think the scariest part is when they are giving you the shot, there is another nurse waiting around with a huge syringe in case you have an allergic reaction to it.
The ASO is the organization that runs the Dakar (They are the same group that organizes the Tour de France). They are extremely meticulous with all the entries. The entry fees are enormous, and lets not mention all the paper work that needs to be filled out! I had to send my passport to them so I can get my Visas to travel throughout Africa.
I?m scheduled to leave with the team the morning of January 1st 2008 arriving in Lisbon the following morning. I will be returning late January pending on the outcome of the race.I thank Toyo for introducing me to the wonderful world of off-road and to Robby Gordon for this opportunity.Adios and stay tuned?.
This year, the 15-stage epic off-road race starts in Lisbon, Portugal on January 5th and concludes on January 20th in Dakar, Senegal. The preparation for the 2008 Dakar Rally is in its final stages as the support vehicles, loaded with all the spare parts and equipment, begin their trip across the USA today to Savannah, GA where they will then travel by cargo vessel to Lisbon. It is much more of a challenge for the Anaheim, California based team than that of their European based counterparts. The majority of the top teams participating in the Dakar Rally are based in Europe, which allows them more time to prepare unlike Team Dakar USA. Logistic preparation for Team Dakar USA is a very important dynamic to the success of the overall program. Fortunately, the Hummer H3s are airlifted only days before the start, giving the team added time to test and perfect the race vehicles.
As Team Dakar USA enters its third Dakar Rally with the Monster Energy / Toyo Tire Hummer H3, Gordon has also added a second Hummer to his elite off-road team. He has enlisted the help of fellow American Dakar veteran, Ronn Bailey to pilot an identically prepared Hummer H3. Bailey, who is CEO of Vanguard Integrity Professionals, an enterprise security software company, will participate in the next three Dakar Rally events as an integral part of Team Dakar USA. The Vanguard Integrity Professional H3 Hummer entry will be very strategic to the teams overall objective of becoming the first American team to win the Dakar Rally.
With the added pressure of a second team, the team also has to prepare for the increased course length. The organizers of the Dakar Rally (the ASO) have lengthened the course by more than 1,000 km (621 miles) for a total of 9,273 km (or 5,762 miles). Therefore, the team needs to prepare for this added challenge by making sure that the parts will withstand the grueling desert terrain, that there is enough fuel ordered to make it to the end, and that support vehicles and team members get the rest needed.
For Gordon, the support of Ronn Bailey and the second entry easily outweighs the overall strain of the preparation for the additional team. ?If you look at the results of our Dakar effort, you?ll see they parallel to our efforts in the NASCAR Cup Series. Every year our programs continue to get better. We fell out of the Rally the first year after not making a checkpoint. Last year, we managed to become the first American team and manufacturer to win a stage. We finished in eighth place overall. This year, aside from drastically improving the Hummer, the next best thing we could do is try to level the playing field to be more like the multi-car factory-supported teams. Now we have a teammate in Ronn Bailey, and he is every bit as passionate about winning this race as I am.?
Bailey, who in the past had tackled Dakar with his own effort, clearly sees the wisdom in joining forces with Gordon. ?Robby is building some of the most impressive off-road vehicles ? it?s amazing just to watch the Hummer suspension work. For Robby and I to team up for Dakar makes sense on so many levels. It consolidates two strong American efforts in to one powerful team. For both of us the combined resources will provide advantages that will be undeniable.?
While the logistics of getting to the start of the Dakar Rally alone might seem overwhelming, Gordon and Bailey clearly have their eyes set on making history by becoming the first American team and drivers to win the legendary Dakar Rally.
