Sarah's Take: Dodgers, parade match
Team deserved a float in Tournament of Roses in the past

Happy New Year!

Two Southern California traditions met on New Year's Day in Pasadena. In the 119th Tournament of Roses Parade the Los Angeles Dodgers had a float with a huge Dodgers player to begin their year-long celebration of being in Los Angeles for 50 years.

Although I know some people will ask whether it is proper for a professional baseball team to have a float in the Rose Parade, I have always wondered why the Dodgers didn't have a float. To me, the Rose Parade celebrates every American pastime. Baseball is the American pastime. The Dodgers play about 10 miles from downtown Pasadena.

It is fitting for the Dodgers to participate in the big New Year's Day celebration.

As a Pasadena native, my family traditions have included both the Rose Parade and the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2008, the Morris family will celebrate 125 years in the Pasadena area. I still have relatives who live there. I became a Dodger fan because my grandparents and dad were fans. My dad belonged to the Tournament of Roses for over 25 years. I got up early on New Year's Day to watch the Rose Parade. Many times during my youth, I went to Post Parade, where people can view the floats up close for a day and a half after the Parade has ended. My fondest memories of childhood involve the Rose Parade and the Dodgers, and this year they finally met.

The Dodgers should be in the Rose Parade when their most famous player ever grew up in Pasadena. Jackie Roosevelt Robinson along with his older brother, Mac, are the most famous people who came from Pasadena. Although Robinson had to face prejudice while growing up, he had an opportunity to mix with whites. He became an athletic star in four sports at Pasadena City College. The background that Robinson received from growing up in Pasadena helped him to have the strength required to break the color barrier.

Seeing Vin Scully, Tommy Lasorda, and Manny Mota on a beautiful float gave me a sense of excitement for the upcoming baseball season. Since September, when Jamie McCourt announced that the Dodgers would have a float in the Rose Parade, I have been looking forward to seeing it. I enjoy the offseason because I can recharge my batteries. However, after the holidays, I'm ready for baseball to begin. Baseball is an integral part of my life. Without games to watch, I am kind of bored. Seeing the Dodger float told me that my favorite pastime was coming back soon.

Although some Dodgers fans are skeptical about the Dodgers' chances of being a good team, I am confident that they will be competitive this year for the National League West Division title. They have a good young nucleus of James Loney, Matt Kemp, and Russell Martin. A healthy Rafael Furcal will help a lot. If he is not healthy, Chin Ling Hu is ready to step in and play shortstop. The addition of Andruw Jones will help the offense and defense. The starting rotation has been improved by the signing of Hiroki Kuroda, and if Jason Schmidt returns healthy, the Dodgers will have one of the best starting rotations in the National League. Their bullpen is still strong.

The Rose Parade has always represented hope for the New Year to me. When I saw the Dodger float, it represented hope for a special 2008 season for the Dodgers. It will be special regardless of how the Dodgers do on the field because the organization is celebrating 50 years in Los Angeles and the 20th anniversary of their last World Series championship.
