Each revolution advances the drill a predetermined distance. Positive feed rate is extremely important when drilling certain types of stainless and high strength steels. High hardness alloys of 52 to 65 Rockwell C have been drilled successfully with an appropriate grade of carbide tip. Sandwiched materials of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and heat-treated steel of 47 Rockwell C can be drilled without surge on breakthrough. Exotic metals such as titanium can also be bored with positive feed drills.
