NITROFORM® Ureaform

NITROFORM is produced by reacting urea with formaldehyde under carefully controlled conditions, creating intermediate long-chain polymers of methylene urea, collectively called ureaform. Approximately two-thirds of NITROFORM nitrogen is insoluble in water and needs microbial activity to be released. The remaining one-third of the nitrogen in NITROFORM is composed of water-soluble, short-chain methylene urea polymers and a slight amount of urea.

NITROFORM is a controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer with a guaranteed analysis of 38-0-0. NITROFORM can be purchased in three sizes - granular for general use, chip for fine turf, and Powder Blue® ureaform for liquid applications.

The Benefits of NITROFORM

NITROFORM supplies carbon (energy) and nitrogen (food) to microbes in the soil. This process is unlike that of most other nitrogen fertilizers, where carbon is chemically converted to CO2 and lost to the atmosphere - a great waste of energy. Also unlike other nitrogen sources, soil microorganisms release the power of NITROFORM throughout the growing season.

With more food and energy, microbial populations multiply and decompose organic residue more rapidly. This reduces thatch formation and accelerates the production of humus, nature's ultimate and perfect growing medium. In turn, this process promotes vigorous rooting and development of rooting tissue. NITROFORM is especially effective when it is incorporated in seedbeds or sodbeds, added to container-soil mixes, or applied after core cultivation. The low salt index of NITROFORM eliminates fertilizer burn, even on sensitive roots of seedlings.

How NITROFORM Works

Soil bacteria initially convert the most-soluble fraction of the product, approximately one-third of the total nitrogen, in the first four to six weeks. Intermediate chain-length molecules break down more slowly. By six months after application, approximately 70% of the nitrogen has been released through microbial action in the soil. The remaining 30% lasts for six to 12 more months, depending on microbial activity.

Microbes are most active when plant growth is at its peak and plants have their greatest need for nutrients. Extreme weather conditions (hot or cold) cause microbial activity to diminish. NITROFORM proves its value by remaining stable in the soil until microbial activity resumes and nitrogen is again needed.

NITROFORM resists leaching and runoff - even in sandy soils under heavy rainfall or irrigation - because its nitrogen is mostly water-insoluble and only gradually released to plants by soil microbes. NITROFORM also provides the following superior qualities:

  • Feeds turf all season
  • Enhances microbial activity
  • Promotes rooting and root formation
  • Protects groundwater
  • Features low salt index - very low burn potential
