Fondé en 1961 par trois amis issus du monde des beaux-arts et de la décoration, Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot et Yves Coueslant, Diptyque signe ses propres tissus imprimés, puis fait connaître à Paris les plus grandes marques de la parfumerie anglaise. En 1963, Diptyque édite une ligne de bougies parfumées pour la maison, qui acquiert rapidement une réputation internationnale. En 1968, Diptyque compose sa première eau de toilette, l'EAU, basée sur une recette de pot pourri du 16ème siècle et le parfum d'un pomander aux clous de girofle. Suivent de nouvelles créations, eaux de toilette et savons, et le Vinaigre de Toilette, rare et rafiné. They first produced their own printed fabrics and then began importing to Paris the most renowned English perfumes. In 1963 Diptyque started producing a series of scented candles which soon gained world-wide fame. In 1968 Diptyque produced its first toilet water, l'EAU, based on a XVIth century pot pourri and clove pomander recipe. This was to be followed by other creations, which came as toilet water or soap as well as a rare and sophisticated toilet vinegar.
